Many years later she told me that she still had her clothes on under her dressing gown as she had only just finished and was on her way to bed. Although the former First Lady had avoided controversy throughout her public life, her work with the NSL proved otherwise. Equally controversial was her contention that women were yet intelligent enough to vote and when they were given the vote, were not successful in politics and should instead focus their civic activities on welfare charities. In May of 1913 she was elected as vice president of the New Jersey Association Opposed to Woman's Suffrage and served as the president for the Princeton chapter. There was reason for genuine alarm when public interest in the children led some tourists on the South Lawn to one day rush the nurse of the presidential daughters pushing their carriage and giddily overwhelmed her, taking the babies out and handing them around. Despite the efforts of the First Lady, the public and press had an insatiable interest in the children and, as they had done to their mother, some elements of the manufacturing industry exploited the children by appropriating them in advertisements.
The management change occurred due to consistent overcrowding and insufficient funding, as well as the emergence of foster care as the preferred solution to care for orphaned children. Numerous additions to the home attempted to meet increasing demand, and the asylum remained at the same location throughout its existence. The home received funds from both private donations and county governments, particularly Marion County. A Board of Women Managers directed the daily activities, and a male Board of Directors managed the home’s finances.
The Lodge
Smith Cottages” are nestled on a flower-bedecked hillside, close enough together to form a sociable group, far enough apart to preserve their individuality. Indeed, “individuality” may be said to be the watchword of this community. Josephine Cottage was designed by George W. Flick, built for $5,300 and dedicated by 1901.
They settled in Bagni di Lucca, in Tuscany, living a life unbothered by publicity, until Rose Cleveland died of the Spanish flu epidemic on 22 November 1918 epidemic. He died in 1901, and after Evangeline had observed the traditional one-year of mourning, she abruptly left for Europe and was joined by Rose, the two women living together in Italy. Evangeline Whipple lived for 12 years beyond Rose Cleveland, who died on 26 November, 1918. While there, the 44 year old Rose Cleveland began a romantic friendship with Evangeline Simpson, a wealthy 30-year-old widow.

Becoming the only former First Lady to return to the position four years later, Frances Cleveland was a different woman in 1893 from the bride who had assumed the role in 1886. Her most immediate priority and responsibility would prove to be her three small daughters, two of whom were born during Cleveland's second term. Frances Cleveland finally sought to consciously use her influence in ways that she considered more uplifting for her countrywomen. Perhaps the most pronounced and somewhat surprising were the receptions that she began to host on Saturday mornings, held especially for those working-class women who were unable to visit the White House during the weekdays. When she attended a ceremony to mark the opening of an organization that provided for educational, social, and practical opportunities for factory workers and made a point of greeting women workers, it made the cover of the November 1887Harper's Weeklymagazine.
It certainly added to the fun and just as any other children in the country, we were soon down to the serious business of tearing open presents to see what Santa had brought. After a special breakfast of boiled eggs and ground coffee, it was time to clear up for Father Christmas and any other visiting dignitaries who had hopped on the sleigh. It had a high boundary wall and a turret and I imagine the most magnificent views over Scarborough judging by its eyrie perch. We were told that a German spy had lived there during the war and he used to flash messages to German ships at sea. It was all tosh of course, but children love a mystery and we were quite in awe of the place because of it. She and Mum were best of friends and when Miss Smith retired, we often took the train to Robin Hood’s Bay to visit her in her new home.
THE HOME FOR FRIENDLESS GIRLS.
An inspection of the Home in 1897 described it as 'a cheerful house with all the appearance of a private residence' but lacking in a schoolroom. There was a small green at the back of the building, and a large public recreation ground in front, of which use was made every day. On fine Saturday afternoons, the girls were taken for a long walk in the open country.
Ena was cross, and the others were trying to defend me as I stuck to my lie. I became more and more frightened that I was found out until finally I was in tears. Poor Ena, she had bought that for herself from her meagre pocket money, but I was so afraid of anger that nobody ever did extract the truth from me, believing that the bottle fell in the water.
Friendless Girls' Home, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland
This facility was still in use when the first photo was taken in the late 1930s, although overcrowding led the organization to move elsewhere in 1940. By this point, the South End had become largely Italian, and the building became the lodge for the Sons of Italy, an Italian-American fraternal organization. Although they no longer use the building, it is still standing, with few exterior changes, and it is an excellent example of institutional Colonial Revival architecture in the city. As for the Home for Friendless Women, the organization is now known as the Children’s Study Home, and continues to serve Springfield more than 150 years after Rachel Merriam helped to establish it.
There she bought two property lots for twenty dollars and had her own cottage built there on Gulf Street, five blocks from the pier. Rose Elizabeth Cleveland, always called "Libbie" by her friends and family, was born 13 June, 1846; she was educated at the Houghton Seminary and taught literature in Lafayette, Indiana and later at Hamilton College. During the first period, the Clevelands lived on Madison Avenue in New York City and led a relatively quiet life; during this period Frances Cleveland gave birth to her first child Ruth, and the baby became celebrated in the popular culture of the time. The problem became so widespread that one Democratic Congressman attempted to pass a bill in Congress that would halt the use of any woman's image - whether she be private citizen or celebrity - for commercial purposes without her written permission. When the bill failed to even come up for a vote in the House, the floodgates seemed to open wider in regard to the exploitation of "Frankie" Cleveland. Immediately after her wedding, the facial image of Mrs. Cleveland began appearing publicly for sale on a wide range of items.
In 2013, the Caladh House Association was taken over by Turning Point Scotland. The orphanage accepted dependents from infancy to 14 years of age. Although most of the children came from the Indianapolis area, the home accepted orphans from all over Indiana. The Society of Friends worked to place orphans with families, often with farm families throughout Central Indiana.
The establishment continued to be known as the Friendless Girls' Home and Miss Stirling remained as matron of the institution. Miss Christina Stirling was assistant matron, and Miss Tyre was schoolmistress. When the asylum closed, $4,304 remained, which launched the Friends Education Fund, a Quaker college scholarship program for African American students. By 2020, First Friends had provided almost $500,000 in scholarships to over 1,000 students. The program is primarily for recent high school graduates just entering college for their initial semester and students already in the scholarship program.
The second period followed McKinley's March 4, 1897 Inauguration. During the economic depression but while he and his family were at the summer home, Grover Cleveland was diagnosed with jaw cancer and it required immediate surgery. The Clevelands believed that a public disclosure of the President's condition would add to the sense of national instability, the surgery was secretly performed at sea. Frances Cleveland played a large part in the successful deception of the press and public, specifically misleading those who questioned the whereabouts of the President or the true reason for his lengthy absence from any public appearances.
